Buckle up because I have some things to say today. Coming in hot off speaking at a conference this weekend and hot off of some drama in the myofunctional therapy world.

Here’s the thing – when I started my myofunctional therapy practice in 2016 the dentist I worked for fired me. I had talked to him about the training before I started it. I showed him in the ADHA scope of practice where it included that dental hygienists could learn it and apply it. I put together a whole presentation about it and asked about renting the consult room on Friday. I was so pumped. I started talking to patients about it and they were excited to have answers to their problems that they were looking for. I was ready to go! 

And then when I finished my course and was ready to implement, I let him know and he stopped me. He said,

 “I need you to get written permission from the board that you are allowed to have your own business, because I don’t think you should be allowed to have your own business.”

I was shocked. This man who I had worked tirelessly for throughout his hard times, cutting the tip of his thumb off - in which my bonuses and raises had to be paused - his office manager of 10 years being caught for embezzling - again, in which my bonuses and raises had to be paused - and he had the audacity to tell me that when I finally found a way to increase my revenue, he wasn’t going to let me do it.

After informing him that I didn’t need the board's permission and that I was allowed to run my own business, he came back the next day and fired me. I was shocked. I was embarrassed. I was hurt. 

I’d supported his business for 3 years and had been very patient waiting for that dangling carrot to come to fruition and when I found my own way, I was fired.

I bet you didn’t know that’s how I built my 8 year half a million dollar telehealth practice did you? 

Here’s the kicker - I talked to a former president of the dental board two days later at the annual convention and he told me, 

“Do not bring that to the board. That’s none of their business. You go start your own business and let’s grab lunch to see how I can refer my patients to you.” 

Bless that man.

You see, you do not need permission to start your business. You do not need permission to make money in your business. You do not need permission to charge whatever you want for the services you provide.

Now in my myo world right now, there’s some weird wording being put out there and some letters being sent by education boards that have no clue about what we do and what’s allowed and not allowed. I’ve talked to one of them. They literally said,

 “well this one dentist called and said you’re not allowed.” When asked where it was in writing they had no response and just said, “ummm well it’s not.”

So, why would we let someone with no understanding and their own fear and scarcity mindset send us into an absolute panic and chaos? Why when we know we are not doing anything that we aren’t supposed to let someone else (who has no clue) dictate what we can and cannot do?

Sending people into a panic, frenzy, and spiraling is exactly the intention behind this witch hunt and when people spiral with them it gets out of control. 

However, with jealousy getting more ugly everyday and territorial misunderstandings getting more ridiculous, now more than ever is the perfect time to get out of your 9-5 and grow your business to its fullest potential. Be your own boss. Make your own money. And say goodbye to anyone trying to put you down. 

Don’t give in to imposter syndrome and don’t give in to the fear mongering and the haters. Don’t let self doubt win. The best way to stand up to bullies to be wildly successful. Ask me how I know!

If you are ready to work for yourself, make your own schedule, be there for your kids, and not have to say no to things you don’t want to have to say no to, then quit hiding.
